| Lawmakers pushing legalized gambling bill by the STAFF of donwallacesports.com Supporters of a bill to legalize Internet gambling in the United States laid out their case in front of a congressional panel Wednesday, according to a report by Reuters. Proponents of the proposed legislation, which is being sponsored by Representative Barney Frank, could generate $42 billion in revenue in the next decade. A Democrat from Massachusetts, Frank told the House and Ways Committee that the bill would simply give adults the choice of how to spend their own money. The proposed legislation will come in two forms: One is to legalize online gambling and the other would impose a 0.25 percent tax on all winnings for federally regulated wagers. The matter has become a hot-button topic, particularly with next month's implementation of a law that will make it illegal for American banks to accept payments for online wagering. This is the second time Frank has introduced such legislation, but the current bill is given a better chance to succeed as politicians seek revenue streams to counter a budget deficit estimated at $1.4 trillion. A spokesperson for Harrah's Entertainment, a Las Vegas casino and one of the staunchest backers of legalizing Internet gambling, has said the bill could generate up to $6 billion annually. The legislation, which will allow individual states to opt out if the law passes, is expected to be met with strong resistance by Republicans. |
| AFC Win Totals July 26, 2010 By Don Wallace Most betting shops both offshore and in Las Vegas have recently posted win totals for the 2010 NFL campaign. On that note, let’s discuss a few of those numbers and more. The highest win tallies belong to the Indianapolis Colts and the San Diego Chargers, who are at 11 ‘under’ (minus-130) at BoDog. These wagers have a 30-cent line, so bettors wanting the ‘over’ would get an even-money price on the Bolts.More than anything, San Diego shares the highest total due to its weak division. The Raiders, Chiefs and Broncos are all going through rebuilding phases, as evidenced by win totals of 6, 6 ½ and 7 1/2, respectively. With that said, this space thinks Oakland could turn some heads this year. We saw it was a different team when JaMarcus Russell wasn’t under center last year. Remember, the Raiders went into Heinz Field and won outright as 14 ½-point underdogs when the Steelers were in a must- win situation in terms of their playoff hopes. Click here to read more |
| NFC Win Totals July 22, 2010 By Don Wallace We examined the AFC recently, so now it’s time to touch on the NFC win totals. Let’s start with the NFC South and the defending Super Bowl champs, the New Orleans Saints. Sean Payton’s squad has a win tally of 10 1/2 ‘under’ (minus-120) at Sportsbook.com, which has 20-cent lines for these types of wagers. Therefore, gamblers can get an even-money price to take ‘under’ 10 ½ for the Saints. I loved New Orleans’ only major off-season addition, inking former Chicago Bear defensive end Alex Brown via free agency. He’ll take the place of DE Bobby McCray, who was subsequently released. The draft netted a cover corner in FSU’s Patrick Robinson, but this space is skeptical of Robinson being an impact player as a rookie. Click here to read more |
| SPECIAL REPORT... COLLEGE FOOTBALL PRESEASON TOP 25! by Ray Ledet 1-BOISE STATE...We'll know by the end of the opening week if we've stuck our necks out too far on this one. But if Boise can survive a tricky test vs. Virginia Tech at FedEx Field on Labor Day night, there's no reason the Broncos can't be on their way to their fifth unbeaten regular season since 2004. After all, 21 of 22 starters are back from last of serious Heisman contenders, jr. QB Kellen Moore deserves mention after his spectacular 39-TDP, 3-pick performance a year ago. Staying ahead of any "Big Six" unbeatens through the duration of the regular season is doubtful, but if there aren't at least two of those unblemished sorts this season, the Boise brand probably now has enough poll cachet to stay ahead of any 1-loss entries in the title game queue. | SPECIAL REPORT...GET READY FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL'S "BIG 64" by Ray Ledet Okay, college football fans, are you sure you don't want to somehow force the issues with the powers-that-be in the sport and demand the BCS be junked and a real playoff system instituted? Now, we're not quite sure by which means we would suggest go about doing it, but whatever has to happen to force this issue might be worthwhile. Even if swallowing any party affiliations and lining up behind Utah senator Orrin Hatch or any other politicians who might want to bring the BCS to its knees. Because if something isn't done soon, it won't be long before the conference landscape is radically altered even more than it has been over the past two decades. And college football as we have known it will change forever. Click here to read more |

| PRO FOOTBALL PREVIEW...CHICAGO BEARS What kind of trick was it that Denver pulled on Chicago last season? Weren't the Broncos supposed to send electric-armed QB Jay Cutler, who passed for over 4500 yards in 2008, to the Bears? Did Denver think it could get away with sending the 1971 version of Don Horn instead? But the Broncos were involved in no such hocus-pocus. That was the same Cutler whom many believed had finally solved Chicago's decades-long dilemma at QB, and perhaps had given the Bears their first franchise QB since the distant days when Sid Luckman was taking snaps at Wrigley Field. Forget Luckman; what Cutler gave Chicago for most of last season was merely an updated version of Bob Avellini or Vince Evans, tossing a staggering 26 interceptions in a maddening debut campaign at Soldier Field. | NFL: Five Surprise Teams In 2010 By Don Wallace Training camp is just around the corner and teams are gearing up to start preparing for what promises to be another interesting season in the NFL. There have been quite a few teams over the past few years that have seemingly risen out of nowhere, or risen from a seemingly perpetual state of mediocrity, to either make the playoffs, the conference championship game, or even make it to the Super Bowl. So which teams have a shot at surprising us this year? Which teams may end up making it to the playoffs after seasons of mediocrity? Read on to find out. Chicago Bears The Bears did a lot this offseason to overcome the problems that have plagued them since going to the Super Bowl in 2006 and are poised to have a breakout season. Adding some power on the defensive line (with Julius Peppers), as well as some additional help on offense (with Chester Taylor), along with other moves and additions, may finally get them over the hump this season and get them back into the playoffs. Chicago’s coaching staff is in a win-or-else scenario, so they will do what it takes to win this year. Adding an offensive coordinator like Mike Martz should help their offense keep up with other teams in their division and we may finally see the Bears turn into an offensive powerhouse. San Francisco 49ers The 49ers may finally be able to overtake the Cardinals in their division this year. Not only because Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner has retired, but also because this team has seen some good players on it that have steadily been getting better over the past few seasons. With some consistency on offense, especially at the quarterback position, the 49ers could push their way into playoffs next season. A lot of their fortune rests on the shoulders of quarterback Alex Smith. Smith hasn’t had a lot of success in the NFL after being selected as the number one pick overall just a few years ago, but the 49ers are confident that they can make it work with him and that he is ready to take over the offense. On defense, the 49ers appear to be pretty well set, although they could use some additional consistency from their secondary. If they can short those positions up then they should be a decent unit next season. Look for the 49ers to advance into the playoffs this season and, although they may make an early exit, they should come back even stronger in 2011. Houston Texans This may not really be too much of a surprise for some, but it would be if the Texans could overcome the Colts and win their division. That’s not likely to happen, but what is more realistic is that Houston will make the playoffs as a wild card and, quite possibly, do some damage there. They had the best passing offense in the NFL last season and have done a lot of things to get better during the offseason and could be ready to take the next step. On offense, health is always an issue as quarterback Matt Schaub has missed some time due to injury in the past and he has to stay healthy in order for the Texans to succeed. They also need their running game to improve and it should with some of the work that they have done during this offseason. Houston has also had steady improvement on defense, which makes them a playoff candidate this season as well. As long they can stay healthy and get a good start to the season, it’s entirely possible the Texans could make the playoffs for the first time in their short history. Miami Dolphins It’s not out of the question to think that the Dolphins can get back to the playoffs this season after missing them last year. They have improved in some areas by getting some great talent in the draft and free agency, and are poised to quite possibly make the playoffs as a wild card or even a division winner if things pan out. Getting a year of experience will really help quarterback Chad Henne as will adding a wide receiver the caliber of Brandon Marshall. These two could get together a lot early and often and help propel the Dolphins into the playoffs. With a solid front office and some great talent, this team is close to putting things together and getting back into the playoffs. With the Patriots weakening in the AFC East, along with the Buffalo Bills, the Jets are now the team to beat and the Dolphins could be the team to either give them a run for their money or possibly jump ahead of them. Buffalo shouldn’t be a problem for this team. Oakland Raiders We probably won’t be talking about playoffs for the Raiders, but look for this team to be much improved over what they have been experiencing over the past few years. Some of the things that should help them get better this season include the acquisition of an experienced quarterback in Jason Campbell, more familiarity with the defense, as well as an infusion of solid playmakers on both sides of the ball. Knowing that he’s in a do-or-die type of situation, head coach Tom Cable should be able to put things together much better this season and get a few more wins out of this group. Consistency will be the name of the game for the Raiders and if they can stay consistent then they could end up having a decent season. While they may not pressure the San Diego Chargers for the lead in the AFC West, overall, the Raiders should be much more improved and could become a real contender by the 2011 season. |
